Summer Learning Journey | Week 1 | Day 1, EXPLORERS | Activity 1, Setting Sail

Well hello folks! Friends & families! Classmates! It's finally here! The Summer Learning Journey from 2019 to 2020! This activity is about travelling the vast ocean. Did you know that a person named Nainoa Thompson, a master of navigating, used ancient polynesian wayfinding skills to sail around the world? In 2015, him and his crew stopped by at New Zealand. There, he came and visited the Manaiakalani schools in Auckland. I'd like to be just like him so I'll also be sailing around the world. It'll be quite long so I have brought 10 food items. What is yours?
As always comment how you think this is.

  1. Tena Koe Patrick,

I am Kueni and I’m working as a blog commenter on the Summer Learning Journey this summer working with the Ako Hiko cluster. Have you done the Summer Learning Journey before? I’m looking forward to reading your posts and the other bloggers' posts from the Ako Hiko cluster, over the next few weeks.

Thank you so much for giving such an awesome post about the 10 foods you would take with you if you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. I really like the way you made this activity your own and put your own twist on the sailing the world just like Nainoa. I enjoyed your blog post today, especially the effort you put into the presentation which included your detailed explanations of why you would take your selected foods, right down to your hand drawn sailing picture in the corner. I can also see you’ve attributed all the images you found too, that is fantastic work, ka pai!

If I were going on a 3 week ocean voyage I would take strawberries, corn chips, bananas, apples, canned chicken, crackers, water, dried fruit, peanuts and a packet of lollies.

If you could choose one place to stop on your travels around the world with Nainoa, where would it be?

    Blog ya later,
    Kueni

  2. Hi Patrick,

It is Megan here from the Summer Learning Programme. Thank you so much for welcoming me into your class a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed coming through room 3 and talking to you about the programme. I was over the moon when I saw that you have decided to start the activities.

I am blown away by the standard of your blog post. You have put in so much effort and energy into creating a colourful, information filled post. Kueni was amazed when she came across your work and shared it with the rest of the Ako Hiko team. I couldn't resist and had to head over and leave a comment for you. I laughed at your comment "well, it's water. One neccessary item. Why wouldn't I bring such an important item?". Comments like these make my day as I can see your personality shine through.

Keep up the awesome effort, Patrick. Your humour and energy that you have put into your work have made this post exceptional. Keep an eye on my blog and the SLJ website you may see your work appear as atop blog post.

    Have a lovely day,
